Apps for Living from an AppAholic

Just wanted to share this TEDx talk from Alice Brouhard.

She shares the story of her daughter's traumatic brain injury and her husband's brain tumour and how their lives have been changed by the use of inexpensive apps used as cognitive support.

(If you use voice reminders on an Apple device -- it's thanks to Alice and her daughter Kara that the Apple OS brought back that feature.)

What do you think? Other helpful apps you've discovered?

If We Could See Inside Each Other's Hearts...then what?

Someone shared this short (4-minute) video with me and I thought it was a powerful thing to pass on.

It was made for the hospital's service providers -- as a kind of reminder to look beneath the surface.

But for me, it spoke to a much larger issue.

What if all of us, in every interaction we have, were able to see into the heart of the person we were interacting with? How might interpret what they say, or how they say it, differently if we could see how it fit into their world right now?

I know I often try to do this when someone has really annoyed me. Me and Myself have a chat about what might be going on in that person's life that leads them to be so abrupt or angry or silly or...whatever didn't work for me right then. It at least tends to stop me from assuming their needs match my needs and tones down my reactions.

How about you? What might be different for you if you could see inside another person's heart?

How to Interact

This is a great little video with a lesson on interacting with people with various disabilities. It's short (3-4 minutes), humourous, and honest. It does focus on physical disabilities, but the lessons are the same I think.. People First.

What catches your attention the most?

Which can be tricky?

What's left out for people with cognitive disabilities?
